Laila Ali was inspired by watching popular female boxer Christy Martin in a fight. She started to train as a boxer at the age of 18. Her father did not like the idea of her being a boxer. According to him, it was a dangerous career for her. She made her decision known to the public when she sat for an interview with Good Morning America show host Diane Sawyer.
Her affiliation with her father earned her a lot of media attention. Her debut fight, fought on October 8, 1999, in New York, was covered by several media persons. Laila fought April Fowler, and she knocked April out in the first round.
She also won her second bout against Shadina Pennybaker. Shadina was debuting as a professional boxer. She held the record of a 2-1 as an amateur boxer.
