Early Life & Biography

He was the last but one sibling of ten brothers and sisters. Among his siblings are Michael Shalhoub and Susan Shalhoub Larkin. Shalhoub’s family was not rich per se, and his father owned a mobile meat truck. Tony and his family lived in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Shalhoub’s interest in theater grew from an early age and rather coincidentally. It was his sister who requested him to be part of a high school production, The King and I, as an extra. Though Tony did not get to play a part, that moment he says was so profound that he wanted to pursue the performing arts.
He attended Green Bay East High School. Later he earned his bachelor’s degree in theater from the University of Southern Maine. Post his graduation, he enrolled in the distinguished Yale School of Drama and graduated with a master’s degree in performing arts in 1980. To hone his skills, Shalhoub spent some time at the American Repertory Theater.
But he wanted to make it big in the field of acting and moved to New York, where initially he had to wait tables. Finally, in 1985 he made his Broadway debut in the Rita Moreno/Sally Struthers production of The Odd Couple. In 1992 he was nominated for the Tony Award for his role in Conversations with My Father.
Though Shalhoub started getting television and movie offers and even acted in them, his love for theater ensured that he kept returning to Broadway. In December 2006, he starred in a play opposite Patricia Heaton for The Scene by Theresa Rebeck. Again in 2010, he went to Broadway to act as Saunders in a revival version of Lend Me a Tenor, in which his wife Brookes also participated.
As Shalhoub’s wife also came from a theater background, post-marriage, they starred together in plays, one of which was Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days in 2015. He was nominated for Tony Award for two consecutive years, 2013 and 2014, for his roles in Golden Boy and Act One, both of which were Lincoln Center Theater productions.
Personal Life
Shalhoub met his wife, Brooke Adams, in Broadway in 1989, both were theatre actors. It is a popular conjecture that it was during the stage play The Heidi Chronicles that the two got close and later tied the knot in 1992. Adams had an adopted daughter, Josie Lynn, who was all of three years when the couple got hitched. In 1994, the couple adopted Sophie, their second daughter, aged one. Shalhoub officially adopted Josie in 1997, when she was around eight years old.
Shalhoub is a family man and has often shown this side of his when he owned up that being a workaholic has affected his health and personal life, as he wished to spend more time with his family. Also, during the 2019 Emmy Awards function, he cheerfully declared that he was super excited to be a grandfather in real life as his eldest daughter was expecting a child in early 2020. Earlier in 2003, when he won the Emmy Award for his leading role in the television series Monk, he dedicated the award to his nephew, 34-year-old Gregg Gensler, who passed away the day before.

Besides theater and the performing arts, Tony takes an interest in football. He is a huge fan of the Green Bay Packers and is a season ticket holder. He confesses that as he spent most of his life in Green Bay, he is extremely loyal to this football club. While still part of Broadway theater, Shalhoub got to play one of his famous characters Antonia Scarpacci in the NBC sitcom Wings. In the first two seasons, he was merely a guest character, but the idiosyncratic, self-deprecating, insecure Italian character of Antonio got enough audience appreciation to become a main character in the later seasons.
