He became interested in the idea and decided to leave his business aspirations for ministry.
In the year 1971, he started a youth group with friend Dave Holmbo which was named ‘Son City” while also serving as the youth pastor at South Park Church in Park Ridge, Illinois. Modern music, dramatic skits, and multimedia were combined with Bible studies, and the results were amazingly encouraging as the group members increased from 25 to 1200 in only three years.
Three years later, 300 youth waited in line to be led to Christ in service in May of 1974. Witnessing this, he started dreaming of creating a new church. The group then carried out a survey to find out the reason why people don’t go to the church. The answers helped them in deciding the right approach for the new church.
The group held its 1st service at Willow Creek Theatre in Palatine, Illinois, on October 12th of 1975. The number of people who attended the service was 125. In that service, Hybels spoke on “New Beginnings.” In only two years, the attendance of the Church grew to 2000. In 1979, there was a recommissioning of the Church, and two years later, the Church moved to its present location in South Barrington. By the beginning of 2000, 6 services were being held each weekend for 15000 people in a 352000-square foot building, and four years later, a new Worship Center was also opened.
In 1992, he launched the Willow Creek Association to link like-minded and action-oriented Churches with each other. In April 2018, he announced his resignation, saying that he didn’t want to be a distraction to the Church’s ministry and that he would also leave the board of the Willow Creek Association and that he would no longer lead the Willow Creek’s Global Leadership Summit.
