Bill Nelson was born in Miami, Florida, on September 29, 1942. He is the only child of his parents Nannie Merle and Clarence William Nelson. He is of English, Scottish, Irish, and Danish descent. When he was 14, he lost his father as he died of a heart attack, he lost his mother when he was 24. Bill Nelson grew up in Melbourne, Florida, and there he attended Melbourne High School.
He was baptized through immersion in a Baptist church. In 2005, he joined the First Presbyterian Church. It is situated in Orlando. He became the second sitting member of Congress to fly in space when he served as a payload specialist on Space Shuttle Colombia in 1986. He even served in the U.S. Army Reserve during the Vietnam War before joining politics.
Nelson retired from Congress in 1990 so that he can run for Governor of Florida. Unfortunately, he was not successful. He was then appointed Treasurer, Insurance Commissioner and Fire Marshal of Florida in 1995. He served until 2001.
