David Alan Grier was born on 30 June 1956, in Detroit, Michigan to his parents Aretas Ruth, who was a school teacher, and William Henry Grier, who was a psychiatrist and an author. His father is famous for co-writing the best-seller of that time, ‘Black Rage’. He completed his graduation from Detroit’s Magnet High School and later received a B.A. in radio, television and film from the University of Michigan. He also received an M.F.A from the Yale School of Drama in 1981. During his childhood, his family marched with Marin Luther King, Jr, which took place because of the rise in poverty in Detroit.
