Taylor was born on February 4, 1969, as Lawrence Julius Taylor in the town of Williamsburg in the state of Virginia, U.S. He was the oldest of three brothers born to Iris Taylor from Williamsburg. His father Clarence Taylor was an employee in a dispatching company, and his mother worked as a school teacher in Williamsburg.

When he was fifteen, he got interested in football, and it was late in eleventh grade that he started playing for his high school football team. Taylor was a student at Lafayette High School and following his graduation he joined the University of North Carolina. He became the captain of the team there. Since he showed great skill in playing defence and setting defensive records in a number of categories, Taylor was chosen to be Player of the Year one year after he became linebacker in 1980.

Lawrence always had some problems in his life. He was doing great on the field but not so great in his personal life. He was addicted to alcohol and drug abuse which caused him problems with his family and also in his marriage. After Taylor retired, he started abusing drugs again and in 1995 went to rehab.
