James Norman Mattis was born in Pullman, Washington, on September 8, 1950, to his parents John West Mattis and Lucille (Proulx) Mattis. His father was a merchant mariner, and his mother worked in Army Intelligence in South Africa at the time of the Second World War. Later, his father shifted to Richland, Washington, to work in a nuclear plant.
Mattis completed his schooling from Richland High School in the year 1968. He attended Central Washington University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1971. He also got his Master of Arts in international security affairs from the National Defense University in the year 1994.

James Mattis started his career at the age of 18 when he was enlisted in the Marine Corps in the year 1969. Three years later, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant by the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. After the Persian Gulf War, Mattis was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel.
He led 1st Battalion, 7th Marines during the combat operations against Saddam Hussein for the liberation of Kuwait. His unit “Task Force Ripper,” went straight to Kuwait city to battle against the terrorists. Later, he was made brigadier general, and eventually planned and fought the Afghanistan War.
In 2006, he took command of the Marine Expeditionary Force and was promoted to a four-star general. In 2012, Mattis announced his retirement from the Marine Corps.
After retiring from the military, he served on the board of directors of General Dynamics. In 2015, he joined the advisory board of the non-profit organization, Spirit of America. The following year, he published the book “Warriors & Citizens: American Views of Our Military.” He is also the author of the book “Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead.”
He has held many high-level positions, including NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, Joint Forces Command, and commander of United States Central Command. In 2017, President Donald Trump made him the Secretary of Defense.
