Ernő Rubik was born on 13 July 1944, in Budapest, Hungary during World War II to his parents Ernő Rubik Sr. and Magdolna Szántó. His father was a flight engineer while his mother was a poet.
Rubik went to the Technical University in Budapest to learn sculpture and the Academy of Applied Arts and Design to study architecture. In 1958, he went to the Secondary School of Fine and Applied Arts, and later he attended the Budapest University of Technology in 1962, where he became a member of the Architecture Faculty.
From 1967 to 1971, he was appointed as the faculty of Interior Architecture and Design at the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts.

Ernő Rubik started his career as a professor of architecture at the Budapest College of Applied Arts in 1971. During this time, he built designs for the first working prototype of the Rubik’s Cube in 1974.
Initially, the cube was made of woods and rubber bands, which allowed the pieces to move without falling apart. He used woods because it was easily available at the university’s workshop and because the wood was a simple material and that did not require any heavy machinery. The original prototypes were made by hand, boring holes, cutting woods to hold the cube together.
The students of the university really liked the cube’s structure, and they thought that it might appeal to a broad audience. The Rubik’s cube was initially popularly known as the “magic cube” in Hungary.
