Fareed was born in Mumbai, India, to a Muslim Konkani family. His father, named Rafiq Zakaria, has been a politician allied with an Islamic theologian and Indian National Congress. His mother, named Fatima Zakaria, has been an editor of the “Sunday Times of India.”
Fareed completed his high school from the Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai. He later earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986 from Yale University. While he was studying in college, he has been the president of the Yale Political Union.
