Michelle Phillips, whose real name is Holly Michelle Gilliam, was born on the 4th of June 1944 in Long Beach, California, U.S.  She was born to parents, Joyce Leone (formerly, Poole; November 2, 1920 – January 18, 1950) and Gardner Burnett Gilliam (July 18, 1914 – March 22, 1996).

By profession, her mother was an accountant while her father was a merchant mariner. She had an elder sister as well, Russell Ann (April 17, 1943 – December 10, 2018). Her mother died of brain hemorrhage when Michelle was just five years old. After her mother’s death, her father settled in Mexico, where he used to study sociology at Mexico City College.

When it comes to her education, she had attended public schools in Mexico and, as a result, became fluent in Spanish. When Michelle was 13 years old, her family moved to Los Angeles. There, she became friends with future American actress Sue Lyon and attended several high schools, including g Alexander Hamilton High School, and Marshall High School.

During her time in Marshall High School, she started playing piano, guitar, and cello and skipping classes as well as forging absence permission slips for which she was expelled. She then joined Eagle Rock High School. At the age of 17, in 1961, she relocated to San Francisco to live with her friend, Tamar Hodel. They would get divorced a year later.  Michelle Phillips then married popular American actor Dennis Hopper in 1970, but the marriage only lasted for eight days. She then married radio executive Robert Burch in 1978, but the marriage only lasted for a year, and they got divorced in 1979.

Michelle Phillips’s career began with the formation of the American folk-rock vocal group “The Mamas and the Papas” in 1965. The group comprised of John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, and Denny Doherty, and Cass Elliot. She has also co-written some of the band’s greatest hits, including “California Dreamin’,” which is a part of their debut album “If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears” (1966). Their second album, which was also released in 1966, was titled “The Mamas and the Papas.”

During this time, Michelle had an affair with popular American singer, Gene Clark and in the previous year, she had dated bandmate, Denny Doherty. John had previously forgiven Denny, but this time, he was determined to fire his wife.  Therefore, she received a letter on the 28th of June 1966, letting her know that she has been expelled from the group.

They replaced her with singer Jill Gibson for a short time, but she was reinstated on 23rd of August 1966. With her return, the band went on to perform in a series of shows in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Maryland, and more. Their third and fourth album was “The Mamas & The Papas Deliver” (1967) and “The Papas & The Mamas” (1968), respectively. The group disbanded in 1971 before the release of their final album “People Like Us,” which was mainly done to fulfill contractual obligations with the record label.
