Richard Garriott, whose full name is Richard Allen Garriott, was born on the 4th of July 1961 in Cambridge, England, to parents, Helen Mary Garriott and Owen Garriott.  His father used to work at NASA as a scientist and an astronaut. His father was one of the NASA’s first scientist-astronauts to flew to Skylab 3 and Space Shuttle mission STS-9.

Richard dreamt of becoming a NASA astronaut as a kid, but eyesight problems prevented him from achieving that goal, and he began to be engaged in computer game development. When it comes to his education, he has attended Clear Creek High School. He was able to write 28 computer fantasy games during his high school years.

Career

Richard Garriott began writing computer games in 1974. In 1979, he began working at a computer store, where he saw computers manufactured by Apple, and he began to add perspective views to his games. He then created the role-playing video game, “Akalabeth” and began to sell the copies of the game at the store. One of his copy made it to California Pacific, who signed a deal with him following which the game sold upwards of 30,000 copies, and he made $5 for each game sold.

He entered the University of Texas at Austin, where he created the role-playing game, “Ultima I.” The game was a huge success, and as a result, “Ultima II” and “Ultima III” was also developed. He, along with his father, his brother Robert and Chuck Bueche, established their video game publisher, Origin Systems. He sold Origin Systems to Electronic Arts in September of 1992 for $30 Million.

In 1997, he coined the term, massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). He left Electronic Arts to form Destination Games in April of 2000 with his brother Robert and Starr Long. He later partnered with NCsoft, where he acted as a producer and designer of MMORPGs following which; he became the CEO of NCsoft Austin, also known as NC Interactive.

His game “Tabula Rosa,” which was published by NCsoft, had a seven-year development period but wasn’t greatly successful during its initial release. He left NCsoft in November of 2008, and in July of 2010, he was awarded $28 million in his lawsuit against NCsoft, stating that the company did not appropriately handle his departure in 2008. In 2009, he founded the company “Portalarium.”

On the 12th of October 2008, he flew aboard the Soyuz TMA-13 mission to the International Space Station as a private astronaut and returned 12 days later aboard Soyuz TMA-12. He has also worked on the Windows on Earth project, which provides an interactive, virtual view of Earth as seen from the ISS. In 2010, he released a documentary focussing on his experiences in the space named “Man on a Mission: Richard Garriott’s Road to the Stars.”
