Suzanne Brigit Bird was born on October 16, 1980, in Syosset, New York, to her parents Herschel and Nancy Bird. Her father is Russian Jewish, and she also holds Israeli citizenship.
The bird was interested in field sports since childhood and was inspired by her elder sister, who is an athlete. Apart from basketball, she also played soccer, tennis and ran track. Sue Bird started her professional basketball career in 2002 when the Seattle Storm selected her at the WNBA draft. In her first season, she played all the 32 matches and averaged 14.4 ppg. In the same year, she was chosen in the WNBA Western Conference All-Star team and was the runner-up of the Rookie of the Year award.
In 2004, Bird led her team to win the WNBA Championship and became the eleventh player to receive an Olympic Gold Medal, an NCAA Championship, and a WNBA Championship. She injured her knee in the 2012 season and was ruled out for the entire 2013 season.
