Martin is the son of the racer Martin Truex Sr. and he began his career by driving go-karts at the New Egypt Speedway. The speedway is located in Central New Jersey. He made his move to the Modified division at the Wall Stadium in the year 1998. In 1998 he was of the age 18.
In 2000, he moved to South, and he then rented a home from the Dale Earnhardt Jr. in North Carolina, and then he began racing in the Busch North Series. He also ran the full three-season from the year 2000 to 2002 and then he made a limited start in the year 2003. He also claimed 13 poles and five wins. He then drove his family-owned No. 56 SeaWatch Chevy.

Truex made his start with the Busch Series in 2001 at the Dover International Speedway in his father owned No. 56 Chevy. He started in the 19th position, but then he finished at No. 38th position. In 2003 he began the season with his father’s team, and this was before Dale Earnhardt Jr. hired him, and they hired him to drive his No. 81 Chance 2 Motorsports Chevy. He then made his debut with his Chance 2 at the Richmond International Raceway, and there he ended up at position number six.
