Early Life & Biography

Jakob Dylan was born on December 9, 1969, in New York to parents Sara and Bob Dylan. His father, Bob Dylan, is one of the greatest musicians to have ever lived. Jakob grew up to continue his father’s legacy in creating extraordinary music. He was the youngest among the five siblings. In the early years of his life, Jakob resided in Greenwich Village. When he was around three years old, the family shifted to the Los Angeles area.

While growing up, Jakob showed interest in English rock records his elder brother maintained. Few of those included the Clash, the Jam, and the Buzzcocks. Listening to the Clash, Jakob got inspired enough to start exploring the world of music himself. While in high school, Dylan became a part of various bands as a guitarist.

He was featured on one of his friend’s band’s eponymous album in 1987 titled “Trash Matinee” as a guitarist. Jakob used to be a part of the band known as the Bootheels, along with his future Wallflower bad member Tobi Miller. It was at this time, Jakob had started writing his songs and compositions.

He slowly moved from being a guitarist to a singer and songwriter. After Jakob graduated from high school, he decided to shift to New York City to study art at the Parsons School of Design. Jakob dropped out in the first semester itself and moved back to LA in pursuit of his dreams and passion for creating music.

Personal Life

Jakob’s sons have inherited his Jewish faith and are raised under similar traditions. Dylan had held a bar mitzvah, which marked the religious coming of his son’s age.

Jakob has stated that apart from his parent’s known religious affiliations, he has been a devoted Jew all his life. In an interview in 2005 with the New York Times, Jakob spoke about his relations with his father, Bob Dylan. Since Jakob has mentioned his relations with his father on such rare occasions, there were numerous rumors that there might be certain amounts of tension between the two.

Yet Jakob has refused all such rumors stating that Bob has always been an affectionate father, and they have always shared a strong bond. Dylan has received an honorary Doctor of Letters from Idaho State University.

  1. This is full of errors. The Wall flowers don’t have an “infamous song called ‘Bringing Down the Horses'”. The title of their second album is Bringing Down the Horse (singular) – of which One Headlight is a song off of. This is their “infamous” album. Not sure I’d trust the rest of the info, if this easily accessible, well known info is wrong.
