He was born into a Catholic family, and his father worked as an engineer. Paulo wanted to be a writer ever since he was a teenager, and upon letting his mother know of his desire, he didn’t receive a great response.
At 17, he was sent to a medical institution from where he escaped thrice before finally being released at the age of 20. He then began studying in a law school to fulfill his parent’s wishes but dropped out after a year. He then started living his life as a hippie and traveling through South America, North Africa, Mexico, and Europe and got into drugs during the 1960s.
