Marlee Matlin was born on 24 August 1965 in Morton Groove, Illinois. She is the only daughter and last child of Donald Matlin and Libby Matlin. At 18 months old, Matlin lost her hearing and was rendered legally deaf. In her book, she explained that her deafness might have been a result of Malformed Cochlea. Matlin has two elder brothers by the name Eric Matlin and Martin Matlin.
Matlin and her brothers grew up in the Jewish customs. Her father sent her to a school in her community instead of a deaf special school, and when she was about five years old, her parents learned the sign language so that they could be able to communicate with their daughter. Marlee began acting at the tender age of 7 at a center meant for deaf kids. Her first ever role as Dorothy in the play Wizard of Oz, but she later played in other plays like Mary Poppins and Peter Pan. When she was thirteen years old, she won a second-place award for her essay If I Was a Movie Star at the International Creative Arts festival.

Matlin was in a relationship with her co-star William Hurt for two years, but they ended to separate because William was physically abusing her, which she explained in one of her books. She later met a Burbank police officer Kevin Grandalski when she was at a film shoot of the movie Reasonable Doubts, and it was love at first sight. Kevin had the duty of controlling the traffic and also providing security for the crew.
The couple got married on 29 August 1993, and the wedding was at Henry Winkler’s house. In 1996, the couple bore their first child Sarah, and later they were blessed with three other children; Brandon, who was born in 2000, Tyler in 2002, and Isabell in 2003.
