Burt Sugarman decided to venture into production. In 1969, he became the executive producer of the TV special called Dionne Warwick – Souled Out. A year later, he was credited as an executive producer of another TV special, The Switched On Symphony.
This was followed by Changing Scene came up in 1970. He then served as the executive producer for two episodes of Stand Up and Cheer. His first film production was The Manipulator in 1971.
Sugarman also executive produced the TV specials The Jud Strunk Show and The Wizard of Odds. His first film as a producer was The Midnight Special in 1973. He was also the co-producer of Celebrity Sweeptaeks in 1974. In 1977, Sugarman was the executive producer of The Richard Pryor Show and Bill No. Q Music Awards. He then became the co-producer of the series Whew! in 1979.
In 1982, he became the executive producer of the movie Kiss Me Goodbye. It was followed by the films Extremities, Children of a Lesser God, and Crimes of the Heart. The film Children of a Lesser God was a critical success and he went on to receive an Academy Award nomination.
He then became the executive producer of the series The Newlywed Game in 1988. Sugarman has also been associated with Mary Hart Presents Love in the Public Eye in 1990.
