Joe Lopez is mostly known for being a founder of the Tejano music group, Mazz. Tejano is a popular style of music that integrates both Mexican and American aspects. The group became one of the most popular Tejano music bands in the 1990’s when the genre was at its peak.
The band was formed in 1978 by Joe Lopez and Jimmy Gonzalez. It was known for using the synthesizer and mixing rock and roll into their original Tejano style. They got a marketing contract with Coors in the mid-1980’s that really gave the band the exposure they needed. This enabled the band to tour in Florida, California and most of the southwest and Pacific coasts of USA.
The band’s repertoire included songs by Luis Silva called Laura Ya No Vive Aqui, OlvidareTuNombreand OtraVez. These songs gave the band the success and respect they deserved and began receiving awards in Tejano Music Award ceremonies.By 1986, they were already selling 50,000 units and became one of the top-selling Tejano acts in the industry.
They gained a reputation for being ‘bad boys’ among their peers, considering that they were known for being late for their shows. They signed with CBS Records in 1988 and released Straight from the Heart, however, the following year they signed with EMI Latin. The group’s album, Olvidare, was released in 1990 and topped the Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart in July 1990.
In 1998, Lopez and Gonzalez separated and decided to pursue their solo careers with their own bands. Gonzalez signed with Freddie Records in 1999.
