Phiona was born to her mother, Harriet Mutesi, on 28th March 1996. She grew up in a slum known as Katwe in Kampala. Her older sister, Julia, and her other siblings were taken care of by their mother, as she lost her father to AIDS when she was just three years old.
But that is not where her misery ended because she also lost her sister. Later she dropped out of school and started selling maize due to financial problems.
But one day, her life changed when she met Robert Katende after discovering a project run by Sports Outreach Institute, a Christian-led sports mission. There she started learning chess, and her coach became well aware of her talents.
She also realized the importance of education, so she completed her primary and secondary education from Universal Junior School of Kampala and St. Mbuga vocational school, respectively. Phiona visited Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington, where she was offered a scholarship and thus continued her study there. She also wants to major in sociology in the future.
