Early Life & Biography
Coleman was born on 6th of August in 1969 Manhattan to a Jewish family. His father worked as a psychiatrist and his mother, Elizabeth Coleman, was the president of the Bennington College from 1987 to 2013. When he was growing up, his mother was the Dean of The New School in downtown Manhattan, The family later moved to Vermont when he went to College.
Coleman went to the Stuyvesant High School and later earned a B.A. in philosophy from Yale University in 1991. As an undergraduate in Yale, he participated in the Ulysses S. Grant tutoring programme in reading for inner-city pupils at New Haven High School. He later started a community service program for inner-city students.
1991 was quite an eventful year for Coleman, he was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and earned a second B.A. in English Literature at University College in Oxford. He also earned a MPhil (Master in Philosophy) in classical philosophy from the University of Cambridge.

When David Coleman was in England, he became friends with Jason Zimba, a Williams College graduate and a fellow Rhodes scholar. The two became really good friends and later business partners.
Career
David Coleman left Oxford for New York with the intention of teaching English in high school. However, after struggling to find a job as a teacher, he started working as a consultant at McKinsey & Company. He also did some pro bono work for school districts while he was at McKinsey & Company.
Together with friend Zimba, Coleman co-founded The Grow Network, an internet-based consulting organization that analysed test scores for states and large school districts. In 2001, the company negotiated contracts with the public school districts of Pennsylvania, California, Nevada, New Mexico and many other states.
In 2004, the organization was purchased by McGraw-Hill Education, the digital educational division of The McGraw-Hill Companies.
In 2007, Coleman, Zimba and Sue Pimentel, an educational analyst, founded Student Achievement Partners (SAP), a non-profit organization which researches and develops ‘achievement based’ assessment standards. Coleman left the organization in October of 2012 to head the College Board.
In 2009, an initiative was launched by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers to write Common Core State Standards for students progressing from elementary to high school in English and Math.
The initiative was meant to prepare students for the careers they choose to pursue. Coleman was part of the English Language Arts writing team. His long-term friend, Zimba, was the leader on the Mathematics writing team.
As mentioned earlier, Coleman was appointed as the president of the College Board (in charge of SAT) on the 16th of May, 2012. As president, he has spoken about the need for the Board to expand access to college by minorities and low-income students.
In 2014, the College Board announced a redesign of the SAT, and was later implemented in the spring of 2016. Some of the changes made were no penalties for unanswered questions, removal of obscure vocabulary words and a few others.
