Judy Collins was born on 1st May 1939 in Seattle, Washington. When she was born she was called Judith Marjorie Collins. Collins was born the eldest in a family of five siblings. They lived in Washington for ten years, and at the age of ten her father who was a blind singer, radio show host, and pianist took a job in Denver, Colorado.
The whole family moved there her grandfather was Irish. Judy got polio at the age of 11 years and spent two months in isolation in a hospital. Collins was lucky enough to study classical piano with Antonia Brico, making her public debut at the age of 13 years, she performed at Mozart’s Concerto for two pianos.

Brico took a dim view, of Collins’s developed interest in folk music. This made her decide to discontinue her piano lessons although it was not easy. After she became internationally known she invited Brico to one of her concerts in Denver.
When they meet after the performance Brico grabbed her hands into hers, looked directly to her eyes and said Little Judy, you really could have gone places. Judy later discovered that Brico herself had made a living when she also young playing jazz and ragtime.
Collins made her way to Greenwich Village, New York City, where she played in clubs like Gede’s Folk City until she signed with Elektra Records, she released her first album, A maid of Constant Sorrow, at first she sang traditional songs written by others.
