He went to Grinnell, Iowa’s Grinnell College after completing high school. Later he got transferred to UCLA for his BA in psychology. The actor also went to the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre to learn acting.

Walter Koenig made his film debut by appearing in The Norman Vincent Peale story in 1962. In 1974, he was seen in Nightmare Honeymoon. It was in 1979 when he appeared as Pavel Chekov in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Following this, he went on to appear in many Star Trek movies. In 1989, he was seen as Col. Jason Grant in Moontrap. He was also seen in Star Trek Generations in 1994.
He then became Joe Merchant in Drawing Down the Moon. In 2006, he was seen in the movie Mad Cowgirl. The following year, he went on to appear in InAlienable. This was followed by starring in Blue Dream as Lassie.
