Born on 6th January 1967, Kumar spent his entire childhood in the city of Madras in Tamil Nadu, India. He attended Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan and later joined the Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School. However, he had to quit his studies midway to support his family as his father passed away when he was nine years old. He then started earning at a very young age as a band arranger and instrumentalist for various orchestras. He also obtained a scholarship from the Trinity College of Music and graduated in Western classical music.
At the age of 23, he, along with his family, converted from Hinduism to Islam after his sister got relief from serious illness because of the blessings of a Pir Quadri, Sheik Abdul Qadir Jeelani. He then changed his name to Allah Rakha Rahman.
