Early Life & Biography
Al Green was born in Forrest City on April 13, 1946. He has nine other siblings, and his father’s name is Robert G. Greene, and his mother’s name is Cora Lee. His father was a sharecropper. Al used to perform with his brothers in a group known as the Greene Brothers at the age of ten. Later in the 1950s, the family relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Al was kicked out of his home while he was in his teens as his devoutly religious father caught him listening to Jackie Wilson. He then started living with a prostitute and began hustling. He also used to do recreational drugs.
When he was in high school, he formed a vocal group named Al Greene and the Creations. In 1968, the band released their song “Back Up Train” and released it on Hot Line Music. The song was hit on the R&B charts, and it peaked at number 46. But the songs released later were a fail. Then they came in contact with Willie Mitchell, who hired him in 1969.
Personal Life
In 1974, Mary Woodson, who was Greene’s Girlfriend, assaulted him because he disagreed to marry her, and she then committed suicide. Although she was already married and had three children. She doused him with a pot of boiling grits while he was preparing the bed for them. This caused second-degree burns on his back, stomach, and arms. She later shot herself with Green’s .38 handgun. Police then found a suicide note inside her purse.
Green was treated for his burns at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis, and when he was released from there, he was held at gunpoint by his cousin, who said that he owed her some money. Later Green didn’t press any charges.
In 1976, Green established the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in Memphis. In September 2013, Green’s sister Maxine Green was missing from her assisted living home, and as of November 2019, she hasn’t been found yet.
On June 15, 1977, he married his first wife, whose name was Shirley Green, in Memphis. They have three daughters together. Shirley filed for divorce in 1978 as she accused him of domestic violence. His former secretary, Linda Wills, also filed a $25,000 civil suit against him in 1974.
