Carlos Alan Autry Jr. is a politician, actor, and former NFL player from the United States. Carlos Brown was his nickname throughout his brief football career. On the NBC (and subsequently CBS) television series In the Heat of the Night, he played Captain Bubba Skinner, who was played by Carroll O’Connor.

Autry was the son of Carl and Verna (née Brown) Autry, and was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. After his parents split when he was a year old, his name was changed to Carlos Brown. In California’s San Joaquin Valley, he worked with his mother and stepfather, Joe Duty, planting and harvesting cotton, grapes, and other crops. They lived in migrant labour camps as they travelled around the valley. They moved to Riverdale, California, when he was twelve years old.

He married Vicky Brown in 1980, and the couple has one daughter, Lauren. Carlos reconnected with his biological father, Carl, while filming on the film Southern Comfort in Shreveport, Louisiana. Soon after, he reverted to his maiden name of Autry and used his middle name, Alan, as his first name.
His marriage to Brown was strained by his rare acting engagements and vices, and the pair separated in 1986. He became a born-again Christian the same year and began to change his life.
Autry married Kimberlee Green in 1994, and they had a daughter together, Heather, from a previous marriage. In 1997, the pair founded Dirt Road Productions, which produced The Legend of Jake Kincaid, a television film in which Alan functioned as producer, director, and screenplay, as well as starring with Green and son Austin.

Autry was a standout quarterback for Riverdale High School and won a scholarship to the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, after graduating in 1970. When the Green Bay Packers picked him as a backup quarterback in 1975, he had a Bachelor of Arts degree and intended to be a teacher.
In 1976, he started three games before being released by then-coach Bart Starr the following year. After retiring from sports, he tracked down a buddy who had once introduced him to film director Robert Altman and moved to Hollywood to pursue acting.
Remember My Name, directed by Robert Altman, starred Autry (then known as Carlos Brown) in a brief role in 1978.Autry had guest appearances on a number of television shows during the 1980s, including Cheers, The A-Team, Dukes of Hazzard, and Newhart. He was also sucked into Hollywood’s drug and alcohol addictions.
He was cast as Sergeant “Bubba” Skinner in the television series In the Heat of the Night, which also starred Carroll O’Connor, in 1988. The show lasted till 1995.
Autry was elected mayor of Fresno, California, in November 2000, after campaigning as a Republican. In 2004, he was re-elected with more than 72% of the vote. He kept a balanced budget with a surplus as mayor without reducing municipal employees. He was a staunch backer of Proposition 8, California’s anti-gay marriage law.
He launched an effort to end homelessness in Fresno in 2004 by ordering sweeps of homeless encampments in the city’s downtown. The program, according to a federal judge, violates the 4th and 5th Amendment rights of homeless persons by destroying property without due process.
Despite his initial opposition to the verdict, Autry eventually realized that Fresno’s homeless policy was unfair and publicly apologized to the homeless population. Autry worked with the Fresno City Council in the closing months of his final tenure as mayor to draft a 10-year strategy to combat chronic homelessness.
