Early Life
Andrea Mitchell was born on October 30, 1946, in New Rochelle, New York. She is from a Jewish family, and her mother was an administrator at the New York Institute of Technology, while her father was the CEO and partner of a furniture manufacturing company. Both her parents worked in Manhattan, New York. Her father was associated with the Beth El Synagogue in New Rochelle for 40 years as the President. Her brother later moved to British Columbia.
Mitchell studied at the New Rochelle High School and then did her Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature in 1967. While she was at the University of Pennsylvania, she also became the news director of the student radio station.
After her graduation, she continued her stay in Philadelphia. She became a reporter to the KYW radio and became the city correspondent and also worked for Mitchell rose to prominence as the station’s City Hall correspondent, during the Mayor Frank Rizzo’s administration and also reported for sister broadcasting station KYW-TV.

In 1976, Andrea moved to Washington D.C. and joined the CBS-affiliate WTOP, which is now called WUSA.

Then she became the NBC News energy correspondent. She reported extensively during the late-1970s energy crisis and the Three Mile Island nuclear accident.
