Roberta Lee Streeter was born on 27 July 1942 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi. She was born to Ruby Lee (nee Shipman) and Robert Harrison Streeter. Soon after Gentry was born, her parents divorced, and her mother relocated to California. Her paternal grandparents had to take the role of raising her. There was neither electricity nor plumping at her grandparents’ place.
