Charlie was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma by his parents Rev. Oscar Wilson who was a minister while his mother was a pianist. Charlie studied in Booker T. Washington High School which is located in Tulsa. Wilson started out his singing career in his local church choir at a tender age. He later joined his junior high school choir.

Wilson and his brothers Ronnie and Robert started their music career in 1967 with an R&B and funk group known as The Gap Band. The Gap Band was active from 1967 until 2010 when they retired (43 years).
During their 43 years on the ground, they were able to release 15 studio albums, 38 singles and 13 compilation albums. The Gap Bands debut album titled ‘Magicians Holiday’ was released by Shelter Records in 1974. This was the Band’s album that reached platinum status. They then released another album in 1980 that they titled ‘The Gap Band III’. They released their 15th and final album titled Y2K in 1999.

Wilson was able to release his solo album titled ‘You Turn My Life Around’ in 1992 by MCA records. He later released his third album in 2005 titled Charlie, Last Name William which turned out to be the best. The album peaked at top 10 on the Billboard. RIAA also certified it with Gold.
The single he released in 2010 “You Are” attracted two Grammy nominations which were ‘Best R&B Song’ and ‘Best R&B Performance’. Wilson has, at the same time, worked with several producers and artists including R. Kelly, Snoop Dogg and Justin Timberlake. Charlie featured as a vocalist on Kanye West’s album in 2010, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantast.
