Early Life & Biography
Dale Chihuly was born on the 20th of September 1941 in Tacoma, Washington, the U.S. to parents, George and Viola Chihuly. His only brother, George Chihuly, died in a Navy aviation training accident in Pensacola, Florida, and a couple of years later, his father died of a heart attack. Coming to his education, he has studied at Woodrow Wilson High School, from where he graduated in 1959.
He then joined the College of Puget Sound, but he transferred to the University of Washington in Seattle, a year later, to study interior design. He joined Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity in 1961, and the following year, he chose to drop out of the university and began studying art in Florence. He took a weaving class where he added glass shards with tapestries. In 1965, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in interior design from the University of Washington.
He then received a full scholarship to attend the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He earned a Master of Science degree in sculpture in 1967. He has also studied at the Rhode Island School of Design from where earned the Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture in 1968. In the same year, he was awarded a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant for his work in glass, as well as a Fulbright Fellowship.
Personal Life
Dale Chihuly married Sylvia Peto in 1987, but they got divorced four years later in 1991. He married Leslie Jackson in 2005, and the two have been together ever since. Together, they have a son, Jackson Chihuly. He suffered a car accident in 1976, which blinded his left eye. Three years later, he dislocated his right shoulder while bodysurfing. After this, he wasn’t able to hold the glass blowing pipe because of which he hired others to do the work.

Career
Dale Chihuly spent the early years of his professional life teaching at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine. He founded the Pilchuck Glass School near Stanwood, Washington, with John Hauberg and Anne Gould Hauberg. He has also founded the Hilltop Artists program in Tacoma, Washington, at Jason Lee Middle School and Wilson High School. Dale Chihuly and his artists were the subjects of the popular documentary, “Chihuly Over Venice.”
Chihuly and his artists also appeared in the documentary “Chihuly in the Hotshop.” Dale’s works have been greatly popular, and some of his popular works include Navajo Blanket Series, Northwest Coast Basket Series, Seaform Series, and Macchia Series.
