David Raymond Sedaris was born on 26th December 1956 in New York to parents Sharon Elizabeth and Louis Harry Sedaris. His father was an IBM engineer. While his father was a Greek descendant, his mother, Sharon, was Anglo-American. His mother was protestant, and his father was Greek orthodox, and David inherited his father’s traditions.
His family shifted to the suburbs of North Carolina while he was young, and he grew up in Raleigh. He was the second child among six siblings Lisa, Gretchen, Amy, Tiffany, and Paul.
After graduating from high school, David enrolled in Western Carolina University for a while before transferring to Kent State University. In 1977, he dropped out of Kent State. He struggled in visual and performance art, which he has mentioned in several of his literary works. He then shifted to Chicago, where he graduated from the School of Art Institute of Chicago in the year 1987.

Sedaris now resides in Rackham, West Sussex, in England, along with his partner Hugh Hamrick. Hugh and David have been together for a long time as Hugh has been a painter and set designer. Sedaris had made numerous mentions of Hugh in his works describing how he would wear a lampshade over his head and go out to clean the roads and highways nearby of any litter at night. While David was working small jobs at Raleigh, Chicago, and New York City, he came across Chicago Radio host Ira Glass who asked him to appear on her weekly program, The Wild Room. David narrated notes from his diary, which he kept since 1977. David’s appearance on The Wild Room was a success, and that led to his debut on the National Public Ratio on December 23, 1992.
His radio essay “Santaland Diaries,” which was his experience of working as an elf at a Macy’s store, was an instant success. The New York Times stated David to be a “minor phenomenon.” He started recording monthly segments for National Public Radio. He went on to sign a two-book contract with Little, Brown, and Company. In 1993 he published his first book and stated to the New York Times that he had already finished 70 pages of his second book.
In 1994, David published the Barrel Fever, which was a collection of stories and essays. He then went on to be associated with The American Life, a radio show by Ira Glass in 1995. In 1997, he wrote a collection of essays “Naked,” which won the Randy Shilts Award for Gay Non-Fiction from Publishing Triangle in 1998.
His next five essay collections include Naked in 1997, Holidays on Ice in 1997, I Talk Pretty One Day in 2000, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim in 2004, When You’re Engulfed in Flames in 2008 and went on to become the New York Times bestseller. In April 2010, David’s four-part essays were aired over by BBC RADIO 4. His ninth book, “Lets Explore Diabetes with Owls,” was released in April 2013. In 2014, he was a part of the documentary, “Do I sound gay?”
