Career

Diana started her career when she was appointed as the publishing supervisor of Science Software Quarterly in the year 1984. At that time, she was working at the Environmental Studies Center, Arizona State University. In the mid-1980s, she also wrote technical articles and software reviews for software publications, and famous Disney comics, and science articles. After working as a professor in the field of scientific computation at Arizona State University for twelve years, she decided to write full-time.

In 1988, Diana planned to write a novel “practice, just to learn how.” She was writing for herself and had no plans to make money out of it. She was interested in writing a historical novel but had no background and experience.

A seventeen-year-old man named Jamie McCrimmon inspired her to write her primary male character, “James Fraser” in the novel. To explain the modern attitude and behavior of the female character in the novel, she made use of time travel.

As she was writing the novel when the Internet / “World Wide Web” did not exist, she performed the research via books to know more about the ancient lifestyle.  As there was no online repository of information “Google,” she researched through an extensive array of books to make her novel real, impactful, and genuine as much as possible. Diana posted a short extract of her creation on the CompuServe Literary Forum. The famous author of that time, John E. Stith, noticed it and introduced Diana to literary agent “Perry Knowlton” who named it “Cross Stitch.”

The British publishers who were going to publish her first book modified the title of the book to Outlander. However, the book was released in its original title in London. According to Diana, her American publishers may have liked the title “Cross Stitch,” however, one of the publishers cleared it stating the reason they changed the title was the former one appeared to be more of an embroidery. They wanted to give a more exciting name to the book, and so they changed the title from “Cross Stitch” to “Outlander.”

At the time when her second book got over, she had quit from the faculty post at Arizona State University to make writing as her full-time career. This is when she made a transition to a full-time author.

Till 2014, the Outlander series has a total of eight published novels. She has also published “The Exile” in 2010.
