Bellisario was born on August 8, 1935, in the city of Cokeburg, Pennsylvania. His father was an Italian-American citizen, and his mother was Serbian-American. He received the rank of sergeant when he was in the U.S. Marine Corps from the year 1955 to 1959. He did his graduation in journalism in 1961 from the Pennsylvania State University.
After completing his degree in journalism, in 1965, he started working as an advertising copywriter in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Then three years later, he became the creative director of the Bloom Agency, which is based in Dallas, Texas.
He worked for 15 years in the advertising industry and then decided to pursue screenwriting and production, so he moved to Hollywood.

Apart from T.V. series, he also wrote and directed a feature film called Last Rites, released in 1988.
