Efren Manalang Reyes was born on 26 August 1945 in Mexico, Pampanga, Philippines. He moved to Manila at the age of four. Later, he started working as a Billiards attendant at his uncle’s billiards hall, and there he learned various cue sports. At that time, he was not that tall, so he used to stand on the Coca-Cola cases while playing. At night he used to sleep on the pool table.

He is popularly known by his nickname, The Magician and Bata. He was also known as “Efrey” by his colleagues.

In 1983, Reyes defeated Pepito Dacer in the finals of Philippine Professional Pocket Billiards Championships. He went to the United States in the 1980s to compete at an international level. He soon started winning several tournaments in Europe, U.S., and Asia. By the mid-1990s, Reyes became one of the elite players of the Philippines.

He rose to fame when he became the first non-American to win the US Open Nine Ball Championship in 1994. Two years later, he faced his rival Earl Strickland in the Color of Money event. Reyes won the final match by 120-117 and was awarded the prize money of US$100,000.

In 1999, Reyes won the first WPA World Nine-ball Championship to be broadcasted on television. In 2001, he won the International Billiard Tournament organized in Tokyo, Japan.
