Career
As a graduate assistant coach, Gary started his career in 1969 and spanned through to 1971 at the University of Missouri under Coach Al Onofrio. After graduation, he coached Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs, where he won conference titles, and in 1980 and 1981, he reached the semi-finals. He was the head coach for nine years and coached for 11 years.
Gary then joined Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado as the head coach, but two years later, he left for Colorado working under Bill McCartney as an assistant coach. He won his first, and the only national championship was in the 1991 Orange Bowl when he was an offensive coordinator.
In 1991, Gary joined Northwestern as the head coach, where he turned doom into the sunshine after years of losses to the best season till now. He led them to win the first Big Ten Conference title since 1936 as well as playing in the Rose bowl in 1996 with the last being in 1949. The following year they reached the Florida Citrus Bowl. This led him to be inducted in the Northwestern University Athletic Hall of Fame. He stayed at Northwestern for eight seasons and joined Colorado.
