Early Life & Biography
When Geno was seven years old, they immigrated with his family from Montella in Southern Italy to Norristown, and he spent his childhood there. When his family immigrated, he didn’t speak English Auriemma was tutored in 2nd grade at St. Francis of Assisi by John, who was his classmate. In 1977 he graduated from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. After his graduation, he was hired as an assistant coach at St Joseph’s University, where he worked from 1978 to 1979.
Geno began his career at Bishop McDevitt HS in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, coaching women’s basketball. Auriemma took a two-year absence from Basketball College, to serve as an assistant coaching position with the University of Virginia Cavaliers women’s team in 1981. The decision to hire Auriemma came as part of the university’s commitment to better fund women’s sports. He was the final interviewer most of the other candidates were highly qualified. Most were female; one of them included was Chris Dailey, who became Geno’s assistant and is currently the associate head coach.
