Glen Travis Campbell was born on April 22, 1936, in Billstownn Arkansas, United States. He was born to John Wesley and Carrie Dell Campbell.

He was the seventh child out of 12 children. They lived on a farm and made a living out of growing cotton, watermelon, and potatoes. Glen started playing the guitar at the age of five. His uncle gave him one as a gift and also taught him the basics. He practiced a lot on his own. He started playing the guitar at fairs.

Glen Campbell founded his band named Western Wranglers in 1958. He moved to Los Angeles in 1960 to become a session musician. He later joined The Champs. He eventually joined a group of studio musicians called The Wrecking Crew.

He left The Champs in May 1961. He was signed on to Crest Records. He released his debut single, “Turn Around, Look At Me.” This solo performed quite well, placing number 62 on the Billboard 100. He later signed on to Capitol Records. He then released his next single titled “Too Late to Worry, Too Blue to Cry.

He started appearing on Cameron Ron’s “Star Route” in 1964. In 1965, he released a different version of Buffy Sainte- Marie’s “Universal Soldier.” This song became his biggest hit placing number 45 on Billboard Hot 100. His subsequent singles did not perform well.

He next collaborated with Al De Lory to release “Burning Bridges.” A song which performed very well. It became one of the top 20 country songs in 1967. They released an album with the same name. In the same year, they released “Gentle On My Mind.” The song was written by John Hartford. It recorded massive success. It was followed by “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” and “I Wanna Live.”

In 1974, he appeared in a movie titled “Strange Homecoming.” He also released songs that were U.S number hits in the 1970s. These included “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Southern Nights.” He appeared on several shows, including “Desperate Housewives” and “High School High.”

Death

Glen Campbell was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2010. He embarked on a goodbye tour with his children as backup singers. His final album titled “Adios” was released in 2017. He died on August 8, 2017, in his home in Nashville.
