Gucci is one of the notable Italian luxury brands of fashion and leather goods. Guccio Gucci founded the Company in Tuscany in the year 1921. Gucci is one of the top brands globally when it comes to fashion and is ranked at 41st position in the magazine’s annual 2009 “Top Global 100 Brands” chart, which was created by Interbrand.
Inception
Guccio Gucci was an immigrant hotel worker in Paris and later in London, and he was impressed with the luxurious luggage that he used to saw in the hotel. Before leaving for work, he used to visit the manufacturer, H.J. Cave & Sons. Then when he returned to his birthplace Florence which was known for its skilled workers and materials, he established a shop in 1920 which used to sell excellent leather goods with classic styling. He maintained traditional aspects of production.
Together with his three sons Aldo, Vasco, and Rodolfo, he expanded the company to stores in Milan and Rome and established some more shops in Florence. Gucci stores were known for their iconic ornament loafer as well as silks and knitwear.
Then the company started proliferating, and it prospered through the 1970s, but in the 1980s, there were a lot of internal family disputes, and it bought Gucci to the brink of disaster.
Evolution
The classic Gucci loafer made its first appearance in 1953, and the brand was known then predominantly for its leather goods. The iconic Gucci logo was then introduced by Guccio Gucci’s sons Adolfo and Rodolfo, who took over after their father’s death. Rodolfo’s son Maurizio Gucci then took over his company after his father’s death and then dismissed his uncle Aldo who was later imprisoned due to his tax evasion.
In 1990, Gucci hired Tom Ford as the brand overhaul due to the disastrous 1980s. The company then wanted to focus on its women’s easy-to-wear collections with Ford – who had been cutting his teeth working for Marc Jacobs at Perry Ellis. The indulgence of Ford was controversial, and many boards of directors didn’t like it, but it proved to be success and masterstroke.
He had a complicated relationship with the company director Maurizio Gucci, but due to his influence, he became creative director in 1994. This proved to be a blessing in disguise as the iconic side cut-out dress from AW96 proved to be a massive success.
Later in AW14, Frida Giannini’s knee-high snakeskin boots and pastel blue and baby pink teddy bear coats dominated most of the fashion editorials.
In 2018, Gucci teamed up with already registered media stars with millions of followers and produced some crazy stuff, which was the eye-catching thing of the fashion that year.
