McCaleb established his first company in 2000 when he founded MetalMachine Inc., where the eDonkey2000 application began to be used. In 2001 he was joined by Sam Yagan, who was made the CEO while he was the CTO of the company. He also developed another network, Overnet, to work together with eDonkey2000, which attracted over 4 million users. However, in 2006 the company had an agreement with RIAA to stop the distribution of these networks but pay RIAA $30 million to protect them from copyright.
