James Robert Davis was born on 28 July 1945, in Marion, Indiana. James grew up on a small farm in Fairmount, Indiana, with his family of father’s mother and his brother. His father, James William “Jim” Davis and mother Anna Catherine “Betty” Davis, worked in their own farm where Jim and his brother Dave Davis were raised.
Davis’s childhood was parallel to the life of Garfield’s owner, Jon Arbuckle, who was too raised on a farm with father mother and brother. He attended Ball State University where he studied business and art. While in his university, he became a member of the Theta Xi fraternity.

Davis, in his personal life, has married twice. The first marriage was with Carolyn, who was allergic to cats. They have a son named “James Alexander Davis.”
