Career
Joe was elected as the sheriff in 1992, and he served in that position for 24 years, having been re-elected in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012. During this time, he was known as a person who sought out media coverage, and he was profiled by worldwide media for more than 200 times a month.
His detention practices included limiting inmates’ meals to two times a day and also giving them Nutraloaf and other foods from food rescue. He set up a “Tent City,” which was an extension of the County jail of Maricopa. Joe described the tent as a “concentration camp,” and the temperatures there were said to be very high.
He reinstituted chain gangs in 1995 and expanded the concept by instituting female inmates. Joe forced the inmates to wear pink underwear with the argument that it would not be stolen by the other inmates upon release. He then started to sell customized pink boxers as a fund-raiser. The boxers had the logo “Go, Joe.”
In 2000 there were claims that Joe’s office failed to investigate serious crimes. This followed after a case where a 14-year-old girl was raped by classmates was cleared. Another case where a 15-year-old girl was raped by strangers was also cleared within a month, and no investigations or arrests were made. Arpaio was also accused of several other things like targeting political opponents, wrongful arrest, abuse of power, misspending of funds, election law violations, among others.

After losing a re-election in 2017 to Paul Penzone, most of the policies that have been incepted by Joe were removed. This was the case even with the Tent city jail that he had started. In August 2019, Arpaio announced his plan to run for the Sheriff of Maricopa County come 2020. He promised to reinstitute all the prison conditions he had imposed during his past tenure.

You are reconstructing history are defending a murderer with made up facts. I hope your children disown you, you vile racist puke.
Arpaio has cost Maricopa County taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars in wrongful death suits, racist policing practices and failing to investigate serious crimes. One suit alone is costing the county over $200 million US.
Arpaio was a thug with a badge and should be held up as an example of what law enforcement officers should avoid being at all costs.
