John Edwards as born in Seneca, South Carolina, to Catharine Juanita Edwards (mother) and Wallace Reid Edwards (father). His family to different places when Edwards was young and finally settled in Robbins, North Carolina. His father used to work as a textile mill floor supervisor. After completing his law school, Edwards joined as a clerk for a federal judge named “Franklin Dupree” in North Carolina. In 1978, he joined Dearborn & Ewing law firm in Nashville as an associate. In 1981, Edwards joined Tharrington, Smith & Hargrove. In 1984, he was allocated to a medical misconduct lawsuit for his client, who suffered from permanent nerve and brain damage after overconsumption of the anti-alcoholic drug.
He handled the case successfully and won a verdict of $3.7 million on behalf of the client. Edwards had sued the US Red Cross thrice on the grounds of transmission of AIDS via contaminated blood products that resulted in a confidential settlement each time. He protected a North Carolina tabloid against a defamation charge.
In 1985, Edwards successfully dealt with a case of a five-year-old child who was born with cerebral palsy. Her mother didn’t choose to undergo an immediate C-section delivery after when the fetal monitor displayed that she was in anguish. Edwards fought this case and won a $6.5 million judgment for his client. After five weeks, the judge continued the verdict but reversed the award on the basis that the evidence was inadequate for the sustenance of the verdict.
He offered $3.25 million to the complainant, but the family of the child appealed the case and obtained $4.25 million in that settlement. After this lawsuit, Edwards received countrywide attention in the form of the plaintiff’s lawyer. He got to deal with a minimum of twenty of such similar lawsuits in the following years and achieved settlements and verdict of more than sixty million dollars for his clients.
