Kenneth Lauren Burns was born in the year 1953 in Brooklyn, New York. He is the son of Robert Kyle Burns and Lyla Smith. He has graduated in cultural anthropology at the University of Columbia in Manhattan. He has a younger brother named Ric Burns, who is a documentary filmmaker.
When he was a child, he moved to several places with his family. Some of these places were France, Delaware, and Michigan. His father used to teach at Michigan University. His mother was identified with breast cancer at the age of three. She died when Kenneth was only 11. According to him, it was a very terrible moment in his life that transformed him.
He got an 8 mm film camera when he turned 17 through which he shot a documentary related to an Ann Arbor factory. In 1971, he did his graduation from Pioneer High School. He later attended Hampshire College in Massachusetts, where students were graded via narrative evaluations in place of letter grades. To pay his tuition fee, he also worked in one record store. Burns studied under the guidance of photographers named Elaine Mayes, and Jerome Liebling. In 1975, he received his Bachelor’s degree in film studies and design.
Personal Life
In 1982, he married Amy Stechler. They had two daughters, named Lilly, and Sarah. Unfortunately, their marriage had to end in divorce in the year 1993. He married his second spouse named Julie Deborah Brown on October 18, 2003. Since 2017 he has been living with her in New Hampshire. Deborah is the founder of a not-for-profit organization where she assists would-be parents in poverty. The couple gave two daughters, named Willa Burns and Olivia.
Burns is also a keen quilt collector. Approx. 1/3rd of the coverlets from his collection are showcased at “The International Quilt Study Center and Museum” at the Nebraska University from January 19, 2018, to May 13, 2018.
