Kenneth Irvine Chenault was born on June 2, 1951, in Mineola, New York, the U.S., to his parents Hortenius Chenault and Anne Chenault. His father was a dentist and dental hygienist who graduated from Morehouse College and Howard University Dental School. His father passed the New York State dental exam with the highest score ever recorded, which was not broken till 2014.
Chenault completed his schooling from the Waldorf School of Garden City, where he was the class president. Later, he attended Bowdoin College, where he earned his B.A. in history in 1973. He also completed his Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School in 1976.

Kenneth Chenault started his career as an associate at the law firm Rogers & Wells in 1977. From 1979 to 1981, he worked as a consultant for Bain & Company. In 1981, he joined American Express as a member of the Strategic Planning Group. In 1977, he became president and chief operating officer, and by the end of 2011, Chenault became the CEO of American Express.
