  1. Went to see Larry play at the NJ. Meadowlands Arena many years ago. Got their early just to see he and the Celtics warm up. I was probably 45 years of age. Larry gets into a argument with the ref over something and he got kicked out of the game in the first half. I was really disappointed or to be honest, broken hearted, as he was my favorite player of all time and I was a big basketball player and fan. But now, I wouldn’t go to a NBA game if you gave me a free ticket in one of those fancy boxes. I am a Korean War vet and anyone who won’t stand for our National Anthem, to me, is scum. Matt Simons;

  2. I totally agree with you. No way no how would I go to a NBA game or watch it on TV if teams do not stand for our American flag. These players would not have this opportunity to play and make the money they make if it wasn’t for the freedom they have and the sacrifice people like you and other men and women made to give us these freedoms we have. Thank you for your service.

  3. I am from Boston, and watched almost every Celtics game back when Larry played. I can honestly say, with certainty, that Larry Bird was a good sport. He didn’t start fights, act like a jerk when he lost and very rarely argued with the refs. It would have had to been a very unfair call to provoke Larry into arguing with the ref, especially to the point where he was kicked out for half the game! Of course, he trash talked other players, just as every basketball player does. Trash-talking is part of the game, and Larry could back up it up.
    In regards to not standing for the flag; I do NOT believe the players back then would ever kneel down. Actually, I know they wouldn’t. The players back then are a different breed than todays players. Back then, the players were epic. Those NBA players put the NBA “front & center”, paving the way for the players today. The players today don’t act like the role models that yesterday’s players were. It is no surprise that these players won’t stand for our flag!
    BTW: As we just read, Larry Bird’s father, Joe Bird also fought in the Korean war with you, Matt.
    Thank you for your service…Jackie from Boston, MA, where all the BEST teams are at…
