Early Life
Les Stroud was born on the 20th of October, 1961 in Mimico, a western neighborhood of Toronto. He attended the Mimico High School and after graduating enrolled himself at the Fanshawe College of London. He took the ‘Music Industry Arts Program’ to pursue his passion for music. After graduation, he went on to work for ‘MuchMusic,’ a video channel in Toronto, for quite a few years.
Alongside that, he also worked with a band named ‘New Regime’ as their songwriter and as a garbage collector in Toronto. He got the inspiration to change his career after he took a Temagami Canoe trip. Les started working as a guide at ‘Black Feather Wilderness Adventures.’ He used to lead excursions in the Northern Ontario Wilds.
In 1994, Les Stroud married his photographer colleague, Sue Jamison whom he met at a survival course. They both were influenced by the wild so much that they planned a honeymoon, which lasted a year, to the Wabakimi area, Ontario. After returning, they shifted to Yellowknife of the Northwest Territories. There he worked as an outdoor instructor for people of aboriginal descent with special requirements. The couple finally made their home at Huntsville, Ontario. They had two children there and started ‘Wilderness Voice’ (outdoor outfit) and ‘Wilderness Spirit Productions’ (Production house and Media Company). The two had a divorce in 2008. Les has also been an adventure racing expert and has participated many times in the Canadian championships as well.

Les Stroud worked for some time as an off-screen artist in the music industry. He has worked on many music videos of various artists, like Corey Hart, Rush, etc., as the production manager. He even shot a documentary after he married and went into the wild with his wife. The documentary was named ‘Snowshoes and Solitude.’
Over time, he documented two more special shows named ‘Stranded’ and ‘Off the Grid with Les Stroud.’ The former showed him fighting the wild, while the latter follows his and his family’s journey from an average home to an off the grid self-built house in which they had to adjust in order to be close to nature.
