On 8 September 1937, Leslie Wexner was born in Dayton, Ohio, to Bella and Harry Louis Wexner, who were both of Russian-Jewish origin. His father was born in Russia while his mother was born in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. Wexner has a younger sister, Susan.

Wexner began his career as a retailer in his parents’ clothing store “Leslie’s.” His parents asked him to take care of the store after he left the law school as they went for a vacation. While on vacation, Wexner analyzed the profit and loss margins on the women’s clothing and found that although higher-priced clothing sold less frequently than blouses and was, therefore, less profitable as a line. It, however, did not change his father’s inventory.
His aunt, Ida, lent him $5,000 in 1963, from which was matched by a bank to start The Limited. On August 10, 1963, Wexner launched the first store in the Kingsdale Shopping Center in Upper Arlington, Ohio. Wexner’s parents closed their store and joined him in running The Limited a year later. In August 1964, he opened the second Limited store and took it public in 1969, on the NYSE.
