Linda Lavin was born on October 15, 1937, in Portland, Maine, to her parents David Joseph Lavin and Lucille (née Potter). Her father was a businessman, and her mother was an opera singer. Her grandparents were Russian immigrants and belonged to the Jewish community.
Lavin started performing on stage from the age of five. She went to the Waynflete School and later attended the College of William & Mary. When Lavin was in college, she appeared in several Broadway shows.

Lavin started her acting career in 1967 when she appeared as Gloria Thorpe in a television version of the musical Damn Yankees with Phil Silvers. Later, she did various recurring roles in television sitcoms like The Nurses, Rhoda, Harry O and Kaz, and others.
