Martindale was born on the 18th of July, 1951 in Jacksonville, Texas, to William Everett and Margaret (Pruitt) Martindale. She was the youngest of three children and the only daughter in the family. Her father was a champion dog handler in Texas and throughout Southern USA, in addition to owning and operating a lumber company in Jacksonville.
Billy Martindale, her elder brother, is a professional golfer and golf course designer. Unfortunately, Bobby Tim, the middle sibling, passed away in 2004. Margo was named “Football Sweetheart” and “Miss Jacksonville High School 1969” when in high school, where she was involved in golf, cheerleading, and acting.
Martindale attended Lon Morris College after graduating from Jacksonville High School in 1969, then went to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. She took summer studies at Harvard University while at Michigan, and performed onstage with future film and television stars, Jonathan Frakes and Christopher Reeve.

Martindale worked at the Actors Theatre in Louisville, Kentucky for four years in the early 1980’s where she became close friends with fellow actress, Kathy Bates
Martindale made her Broadway debut in the 2004 production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof as Big Mama. Martindale has previously appeared in a number of Off-Broadway theatrical productions, most notably creating the part of Truvy Jones in the original Off-Broadway production of Steel Magnolias, as well as starring in the play’s first national tour.
Martindale’s cinematic credits include performances as a fellow nun in Dead Man Walking and Lorenzo’s Oil, both with Susan Sarandon. In Marvin’s Room, she played the doctor of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, and in Million Dollar Baby, she played Hilary Swank’s greedy mother. Other films include Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman’s The Human Stain, Paul Newman’s Nobody’s Fool, Sandra Bullock’s 28 Days, Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan’s Proof of Life, and Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock’s Practical Magic.
