Born to a Caucasian mother and African American father in Santa Clara, California, Barnes was interested and actively involved in sports from his childhood. Del Campo High School where he did his schooling was a breeding ground for his achievement in sports where he emerged as a letterman in basketball and football. He was conferred with honours of All-American, All-State, All-CIF, All-City and All-League in both the sports.
