His father’s name is George Smith, a former jockey and Vidoll Vallejos, and at that time, his mother was 19 only years old. Michael’s parents separated while he was a tiny boy, and he was the oldest of two sons.

Smith spent most of his childhood on his maternal grandparent’s horse farm, where he began training horses at eight. Smith started to race at the age of 11 in his home state of New Mexico and obtained his jockey’s licence at the age of sixteen in 1982. Smith withdrew from Dexter High School in grade 9.

Smith was one of the few American riders to achieve a European classic in 1991 when he rode four stars all-star to triumph in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. He earned his major breakthrough in that same year when he became New York’s leading jockey in the first of 3 years, between 1991 to 1993, with 330, 297, and 313 victories, respectively. The next year, he raced Lure to his first Breeders’ Cup victory in the Breeders’ Mile.

The following year, 1993, Smith fully established himself as a strong jockey, establishing a North American milestone most stakes victories in a single year with 62. Among his many accomplishments were a Preakness victory aboard Prairie Bayou (who was subsequently killed after collapsing in the Belmont Stakes while still being ridden by Smith) and victorious defence of the Breeders’ Cup Mile onboard Lure.

He received his first Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey that same year and an ESPY Award for the best jockey. In 1994, he eclipsed his personal stakes record with 68 wins, 20 of which were Grade I events. Several of their victories came while riding Holy Bull, the Eclipse Award winner as Horse of the Year that year. He received the Mike Venezia Memorial Award in 1994 for “outstanding sportsmanship and leadership.”

He relocated his permanent home from New York City to Southern California in 2000. That same year, he received the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, which recognises a rider whose work and life conduct embodies the absolute most nuanced representation of a thoroughbred racing participant. In 2002, he was the usual rider for Azeri, his second Horse of that Year.
